    Logo look familiar? The U.S.-hosted 1994 World Cup, won by Brazil, fueled American interest in soccer that Major League Soccer intended to capitalize on.

    April 13, 1996

    Boston Gets A Soccer Team With MLS Launch

    The New England Revolution — including Marlborough native and current Revs general manager Mike Burns, above — played its first game as a founding member of the 10-team Major League Soccer (MLS). The Revs lost 3-2 to Tampa Bay at Houlihan's Stadium in Tampa, Fla.

  • Sept. 21, 1996

    First Season

    At Foxboro Stadium, the Revs lost 1-0 to the Columbus Crew to finish their first season with 15 wins and 17 losses. They missed the playoffs.

  • Oct. 20, 1996

    The 1st MLS Cup

    Foxboro Stadium hosted the first MLS championship game, MLS Cup '96, without the Revolution. D.C. United beat the L.A. Galaxy 3-2.

    U.S. Open Cup

    The Revolution advanced to the finals but fell, 2-1, to the L.A. Galaxy.

    2002

    New Coach

    The Revolution hired Steve Nicol, a former player for Liverpool. He won MLS Coach of the Year in 2002, and coached the team until 2011. Nicol coached the team to four MLS Cup finals.

    The Revolution reached, but lost, their first MLS Cup, 1-0, to the L.A. Galaxy.

    2006 MLS Cup

    Coming closer than ever, the Revs, including forward Taylor Twellman, above, tied the Houston Dynamo 1-1 in the MLS Cup final, but lost in penalty kicks, 4-3.

    After years of rumors of a new stadium in Somerville or Revere, reports say Revolution and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft wants to build soccer-only stadium for the Revs, on the border of the South End and South Boston, next to the Southeast Expressway.
